The World Champions Rodeo Alliance (WCRA) announced that Rodeo Corpus Christi will play host to the first stop to the 2022 WCRA Triple Crown of Rodeo (TCR). The first 2022 WCRA Major Rodeo will be held May 11-14 and will payout $550,000.

The TCR is a series of annual major rodeo events which includes an annual bonus that will pay $1 million to any one athlete or collection of athletes who win first place in any three consecutive WCRA Major Rodeos. WCRA Triple Crown of Rodeo events are all featured in CBS Television network broadcasts each year.

Timed Event Qualifying Rounds and Steer Roping Rounds

Timed Event Qualifying Rounds will occur in Robstown, Texas at Richard M. Borchard Regional Fair Grounds May 9-10, 2022

Steer Roping, all rounds, will occur in Robstown, Texas at Richard M. Borchard Regional Fair Grounds Sunday, May 8, 2022. The Steer Roping will include a B roper payout incentive and Showdown Round Advancement.

 

Event Schedule

Richard M. Borchard Regional Fair Grounds May 9-10:

May 8 at 1 p.m.: Steer Roping

May 9 at 9 a.m.: Timed Event Qualifying Rounds-  Steer Wrestling (two rounds), Team Roping (two rounds), Tie-down (two rounds)

May 10 at 9 a.m.: Timed Event Qualifying Rounds- Barrel Racing (one round), Breakaway Roping (two rounds)

American Bank Center May 11-14:

May 11-14 at 7 p.m.: All Disciplines

Event Payout

Bareback, Saddle Bronc, Bull Riding: $49,000 per discipline

Tie-down, Header, Heeler, Steer Wrestling, Breakaway, Barrel Racing: $58,500 per discipline (inclusive of DY Incentives)

Steer Roping – $55,000 inclusive of “B” Roper Incentives

Division Youth (DY)

WCRA welcomes Division Youth (DY) back to the timed event competition in 2022 with the Rodeo Corpus Christi WCRA DY Incentive. This gives Youth rodeo athletes ages 13-19 years of age an opportunity to compete.

The top 8 timed event athletes on the WCRA DY Leaderboard will compete in the qualifying rounds and be eligible for a $21,000 incentive purse as well as having the same opportunity to advance through the entire rodeo.

Nomination Dates

Nominations for all Corpus Christi disciplines (RCC22, SR22, DY) are open now and will close April 10, 2022 at 11:59 p.m. For information on how to nominate and earn a position visit wcrarodeo.com.

Leaderboard No. 1

The No. 1 athlete on the 2022 Rodeo Corpus Christi Leaderboard will be seeded directly into the Showdown Round (May 14) while timed event athletes ranked 2-4 on the Leaderboard will be seeded into the Progressive Round.

Leaderboard No. 1 seed does not apply to DY only RCC22 and SR22.

What Leaderboard Athletes Qualify?

Roughstock: Leaderboard Top 24
Timed Events: Leaderboard Top 48
Steer Roping: Leaderboard Top 64

The top 48 timed event athletes (excluding steer roping) on the WCRA leaderboard will be eligible to enter the qualifying rounds (May 9-10).

Up to 27 athletes (24 VRQ Leaderboard and 3 Outside Qualifiers chosen at the discretion of RCC committee and WCRA) on the rough stock leaderboard will earn a position in the progressive rounds (May 11-13).

The Top 64 steer ropers on the SR22 leaderboard will advance to the one-day $55,000 May 7 event where the champion will walk away with a $10,000 check. There will be a B Roper Incentive through the three Qualifying Rounds and Aggregate.

The top 8 timed event athletes on the WCRA DY Leaderboard will compete in the qualifying rounds and be eligible for a $21,000 incentive purse as well as having the same opportunity to advance through the entire rodeo.

(Athletes must have a minimum of 15 points on the 2022 Rodeo Corpus Christi leaderboard to be eligible for the Triple Crown of Rodeo) 

Competition Format

WCRA will hold timed event qualifying rounds (May 9-10) and all steer roping rounds of competition (May 8) in Robstown, Texas at Richard M. Borchard Regional Fair Grounds.

The top 48 timed event athletes (excluding steer roping) on the WCRA leaderboard will be eligible to enter the qualifying rounds (May 9-10) while rough stock disciplines will feature 27 athletes in the progressive rounds (May 11-13).

The top 64 steer ropers on the SR22 leaderboard will advance to the one-day $55,000 May 8 event where the champion will walk away with a $10,000 check. There will be a B Roper Incentive through the three Qualifying Rounds and Aggregate.
