Veteran professional bareback rider Jessy Davis was seriously injured last Saturday night when 7.04 seconds into his ride on Bridwell Pro Rodeo’s Ted, Davis and Ted both came crashing down to the arena floor of the Maverik Center during the Days of ’47 Lewis Feild Bulls and Broncs in West Valley City, Utah. Davis, 37, suffered serious injuries in the wreck, which was just a freak accident, and was transported by ambulance to nearby Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, Utah.
Surgeons operated on Davis—who qualified for seven Wrangler National Finals Rodeos between 2006 and 2016—later that night, February 1, to repair his liver. According to Davis’s wife, Cassidy, “the right side of his liver was completely crushed, which caused him to bleed out. Over 21 liters of blood were used to save his life. Jessy has been in an induced coma since, and is slowly making the progress the doctors want to see.”
In an effort to help Jessy and Cassidy Davis, who live in Power, Montana, with their little girls, Cru and Quincee, the World Champions Rodeo Alliance has set up a Jessy Davis Fund (click here to donate). In addition, 100 percent of the nomination fees from all Virtual Rodeo Qualifier (VRQ) athlete nominations made this Friday, February 7, will go directly to the Davis family.
Moving forward, the WCRA will be joining forces with Western Sports Foundation in an effort to support injured WCRA athletes. WSF is a non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the overall success of western sports athletes by advancing their health and well-being, and pursues its mission by providing medical, life counseling and financial resources to meet immediate needs and prepare for life beyond competition.
