Rodeo Corpus Christi will play host to the first stop to the 2023 WCRA Triple Crown of Rodeo. The first 2023 WCRA Major Rodeo will be held May 10-13 and will payout $550,000.

The Triple Crown of Rodeo is a series of annual major rodeo events which includes an annual bonus that will pay $1 million to any one athlete or collection of athletes who win first place in any three consecutive WCRA Major Rodeos. WCRA Triple Crown of Rodeo events are all featured in CBS Television network broadcasts each year.

EVENT INFORMATION

Timed Event Qualifying Rounds and Steer Roping Rounds

Timed Event Qualifying Rounds will occur in Robstown, Texas at Richard M. Borchard Regional Fair Grounds May 6-9, 2023

Steer Roping (all rounds) will also occur at Robstown, Texas at Richard M. Borchard Regional Fair Grounds on May 6-7, 2022. The Steer Roping will include a B Roper Incentive payout.

Event Payout

The event will payout over $550,000 with each champion earning $15,000.

Bareback, Saddle Bronc, Bull Riding: $49,000 per discipline

Tie-down, Header, Heeler, Steer Wrestling, Breakaway, Barrel Racing: $58,500 per discipline (inclusive of DY Incentives)

Steer Roping – $55,000 inclusive of “B” Roper Incentives.

Division Youth (DY)

WCRA welcomes back Division Youth (DY) to competition within the VRQ platform in 2023 with the Rodeo Corpus Christi WCRA DY23 Incentive. Youth athletes ages 13-19 will also have an opportunity to participate at this event. The top 8 timed event athletes on the WCRA DY23 Junior Leaderboard will participate in the qualifying rounds and be eligible for their own incentive purse as well as having the same opportunity to advance through the entire rodeo

Nomination Dates

WCRA VRQ Segments RCC23, SR23 (Steer Roping only) and DY23 (youth) are currently open for nominations and all Rodeo Corpus Christi related segments will close Sunday April 9, 2023, at 11:59:59PM.

The DY23 Junior Division Leaderboard as of the weekly audit following April 9, 2023 will be used to determine qualifications to RCC.

Leaderboard No. 1-4

Number 1 athlete on the WCRA Segment RCC23 Leaderboard will be seeded into the Showdown Round.  The Number 1 on the WCRA Leaderboard may participate in the qualifying rounds of competition for the money and will not jeopardize their seeded position.

Number 2-4 (timed event disciplines) on the WCRA Segment RCC23 Leaderboard will be seeded into the Progressive Round.  The Number 2-4 on the WCRA Leaderboard may participate in the qualifying rounds of competition for the money and will not jeopardize their seeded position

What Leaderboard Athletes Qualify?

Roughstock: Leaderboard Top 24 (plus 3 RCC committee invites)
Timed Events: Leaderboard Top 48

  • Riding Events up to 27 (including 3 RCC committee invites) and Timed Events up to 48 in each discipline will be eligible to enter and participate
  • Segment DY23 Junior Leaderboard – Timed Events up to 8 in each discipline will be eligible to enter and participate. DY23 Junior Leaderboard athletes that are also on the RCC23 Leaderboard may only participate via one leaderboard qualification.  The athlete must declare which leaderboard qualification they intend to use once the RCC23 segment closes and prior to entries opening.

(Athletes must have a minimum of 15 points on the 2023 Rodeo Corpus Christi leaderboard to be eligible for the Triple Crown of Rodeo)

Triple Crown of Rodeo Performance

TCR PERFORMANCE:

    • Final performance of the TCR Event.
    • $252,000 total payout ($28,000 per discipline), nine standard WCRA disciplines shall be included in the final TCR Event:
      • Bareback Riding, Saddle Bronc Riding, Bull Riding, Tie-Down Roping, Steer Wrestling, Team Roping Header, Team Roping Heeler, Barrel Racing and Breakaway Roping
      • Payout:
        • 1st – $15,000 (paid in TCR round)
        • 2nd – $6,500 (paid in TCR round)
        • 3rd – $2,500 (paid in TCR round)
        • 4th – $1,000 guaranteed appearance fee
        • 5th – $1,000 guaranteed appearance fee
        • 6th – $1,000 guaranteed appearance fee
        • 7th – $1,000 guaranteed appearance fee
      • Total of 7 athletes are eligible to advance to the TCR Event (4th Performance) in each of the nine disciplines.
        • One (1) – The number one ranked athlete, in each discipline, on the WCRA VRQ Segment RCC23 Leaderboard
        • Top two (2) athletes from each of the three (3) Progressive Round performances in each discipline.
      • TCR PERFORMANCE FORMAT:
        • Showdown Round – Seven (7) Athletes in each of the nine standard WCRA disciplines will participate in the first Round.
          • No Barrel Racings in Showdown Round
        • Triple Crown of Rodeo Round – Top three (3) in each discipline will advance from the Showdown Round for one final competitive ride or run
          • Barrel Racing will consist of seven (7) athletes in TCR round.
        • TCR and Showdown Rounds are clean slate rounds
